Update: uThukela battle to restore water to thousands of homes in Ladysmith

At this point, uThukela does not know when water will be restored

uThukela is facing a major task in attempting to restore water to thousands of households in parts of Ladysmith.

uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza commented that, “Our engineers found that there is no water in the reservoir and people are not getting water in their households, so they suspect there might be a burst pipe somewhere.”

The engineers are walking down the pipeline trying to establish if there are burst pipes, he added.

At this point, uThukela does not know when water will be restored.

In the mean time, the community is frustrated and angry, and lashing out at a water services provider they say is incompetent.

“It’s becoming the norm that the old Indian area, as they call us, always suffers with no water. Do uThukela know what they’re doing and can they explain why we are always the ones affected by the regular water outages?” said Mr Pillay.

Parts of the Indian area are affected and have been without water from Saturday morning. In certain areas, low pressure water returned yesterday evening (April 10).

Residents with dry taps are encouraged to take containers to the mosque in Poona Road to fill up with water.

uThukela appeals to the community to bear with them. “Your patience and understanding in the matter is appreciated,” said uThukela spokesperson Jabulani Mkhonza.
