Drakensberg School introduces Willie Wepener Rugby Grounds

While the two primary schools battled it out on the Drakensberg Primary's sports grounds, the highlight of the day was the unveiling of the new name of the school's rugby field.

PIONEER PARK – Drakensberg Primary School hosted an action-packed sports day against Monument Primary School, Ladysmith, on Saturday, March 25.

While the two primary schools battled it out on the Drakensberg Primary’s sports grounds, the highlight of the day was the unveiling of the new name of the school’s rugby field.

Willie Wepener is an ex-Drakensberg Primary learner who went onto to be a professional rugby player after finishing his school career. He played for the Lions, Blue Bulls, Griquas, Leopards and Clermont Auvergne during his illustrious rugby career.

It was in his honour that Drakensberg Primary School named its rugby field. The symbolism behind the naming of the field was to show learners that they were able to follow their dreams of becoming sports stars, if they worked hard enough.

Mr Wepener attended the day and helped in the unveiling of the name.

“This is an honour and means a lot to my family and myself,” he said.

Thanking the school’s management team for naming the sports field after him, he encouraged learners to work hard and never to quit on their dreams.

Despite the wet weather conditions on Saturday, the atmosphere surrounding the unveiling of the sports grounds ensured everyone’s hearts were warmed.
