#TAKEONRACISM – Why should racist jokes be taken seriously?

Racist jokes have to be taken seriously, and can cause conflict

Racist jokes play a large role in the society we live in, with many jokes going around between different race groups and also within a specific race itself. These jokes can be offensive and very misleading.

Jokes about race can paint a very nasty picture of a race group.

There are derogatory names denoting people belonging to different race groups, and these names often pop up in the jokes that target supposedly common characteristics within race groups and how these traits manifest themselves in everyday behaviour.

Jokes even focus on different kinds of food a specific race might eat, or maybe what kind of beer a certain race drinks.

These jokes are only barely “acceptable” when uttered between members of a specific race group… Once they go out of a race group, they become even more racist and hurtful.

Racist jokes have to be taken seriously, and can cause conflict. Things can start off as a joke and end up being emotionally and mentally hurtful to a person or race group.

There is a school of thought that says racist jokes need to be cut out completely. Stand-up comedians can get away with murder in this regard, but everyone else needs to tread lightly when it comes to the sensitivity of race issues because one person’s joke is another’s insult!
