Zwelakhe develops and nurtures poetry and creativity

At the age of 30, Zwelakhe has read more than 300 books and believes he was born to be an artist in order to entertain and educate

Ithafa Lamaciko (a poetry corner consisting of a group of poets) is a new opportunity and stepping stone for local artists and the creative industry as a whole.

This “creative valley for creative people” was established by the multi-award winning poet and storyteller Zwelakhe Kubheka.

Zwelakhe has crossed the valleys and hills of the Uthukela District trying to fulfil his dream and vision of exploring, developing, conserving and exposing creativity in all its forms.

Zwelakhe started his career as a writer, poet and storyteller at a young age. “As a young man who grew up in the rural areas of Ladysmith, I found it difficult and it took me more than 15 years to realise my dream,” he explains. The multi-skilled Zwelakhe wrote a book called ‘Isijula Somhayi’, which is a collection of short stories, and a novel called ‘Iliba Lisemanxiweni’.

At the age of 30, Zwelakhe has read more than 300 books and believes he was born to be an artist in order to entertain and educate people from all ethnic groups and walks of life.

His vision is to develop, expose and conserve creative work / people wherever he can, and the industry as a whole.

“I find inspiration as I explore new things. I also find inspiration from the books I read; from novels, short stories, poetry and biographies,” says the poetic Zwelakhe.

When asked how he would advise young and aspiring poets and writers, Zwelakhe said they must fall in love with reading and find inspiration from life as a whole. He concludes by saying that the sky is the limit for anybody who wishes to embrace poetry, writing or storytelling.
