Unexpected death of motorcyclist shocks racing fraternity

Mr Buist was transported to Mediclinic Newcastle along with two other riders who sustained injuries on the day. He subsequently underwent successful surgery.

NEWCASTLE – Scott Buist, a 26-year-old motorcyclist from Southport, Port Shepstone, passed away unexpectedly in hospital on Sunday, February 12.

In the Motorsport South Africa Liquorland National Enduro Championship held in Dundee the previous day, Mr Buist competed in the Clubman’s Class and suffered a severe broken wrist when he crashed during the first round.

Mr Buist was transported to Mediclinic Newcastle along with two other riders who sustained injuries on the day. He subsequently underwent successful surgery.

“Mr Buist presented signs and symptoms related to a fracture. His surgery and post-operative care were expected,” said Doctor Relationship Manager of Mediclinic Newcastle, Mariette Classen.

Mr Buist sadly passed away later that evening.

“The staff at Mediclinic were traumatised as his death was unexpected,” added Mrs Classen.

According to sources, Mr Buist lost both his parents and fiancee in a car accident which occurred last year.

He had travelled to the national championship race with his late fiancee’s parents, whom he had become particularly close to in the wake of their shared heartbreak.

Mr Buist was described as a compassionate, happy-go-lucky person and a fanatical rider.

He was an electrical engineer by profession at Portland Packaging in Port Shepstone.

“We would like to extend our heart felt condolences to Mr Buist’s family and friends,” concluded Mrs Classen.

Biker clubs around the country were saddened by the news of Mr Buist’s passing and conveyed their sincere condolences to his loved ones.
