Man narrowly escapes death in CBD shooting

Shots were fired before a vehicle was torched

Ayanda Bonga has described how he narrowly escaped death after a bullet ‘went whistling past’ his head in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He told the Courier how a man, known to him, ordered his bodyguard to ‘kill the dog’ (Ayanda) following an argument over cattle that erupted on Smith Street.

The gunshot wounded his cousin who was standing behind Ayanda at the time. A second person was also shot and wounded. Later, the man’s NRB registered VW Amarok was torched.

The vehicle was parked in a diagonal parking bay on Smith Street at the time. The man and his bodyguard/s are believed to have fled in another vehicle.

It is understood that the man owns a farm on the Helpmekaar road near to where Ayanda runs the farm Tangeni.

Ayanda says charges of attempted murder have been opened at the Dundee police station.

However, the man is believed to be ‘very well connected’ politically and Ayanda remains sceptical that police will complete an investigation ‘to his satisfaction’.
