Observe a vigil on the night of Shivarathri – it is the spiritual call awakening devotees to the devotion of God.This holy night is very auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva. Offerings of bilva leaves are made and the mantra “Om Nama Shivaya” is chanted. Devotional songs, bhajans and kirtans, glorifying Lord Shiva, will be rendered by individuals and groups throughout the night.

Lord Shiva is the God of preservation. His right hand holds a trident that represents the three qualities of purity, passion and inertia. The drum in his left hand represents “OM”, from which all sounds take their origin.
The crescent moon on his head indicates that he has perfect mind control.

The serpent around his neck stands for eternity and also for the individual soul that rests upon Lord Shiva. The five hoods of the snake represents the five senses, which if controlled by man he will have the knowledge of God and enjoy eternal peace and happiness. Lord Shiva is called “Nataraja” when he performs the cosmic dance. This dance symbolizes the rhythmic dance of creation and tells us that the entire universe is, but the divine sport of the Lord.

Purify your mind, body and soul by meditating on Lord Shiva. Whatever your request is – place it at the Lord’s feet and chant his name with sincerity and devotion. Your prayers will be answered.

Join the Dundee Hindu Temple on this holy night and together pray for world peace, brotherhood of man, the triumph of good over evil and a righteous life for all. Take this opportunity to renew your faith in the power of prayer.

All devotees and well-wishers are urged to attend this celebration and receive the divine blessings of Lord Shiva.
