Meat dumping continues in CBD

The health hazard and stench are not the only concerns that residents have expressed, one resident called on the local municipality to put a stop to this method of dumping

The dumping of meat and meat by-products is continuing in the central business district (CBD).

In Phillip Street, a resident noticed that meat and bones were being discarded on the sidewalk. The health hazard and stench are not the only concerns that residents have expressed, one resident called on the local municipality to put a stop to this method of dumping.

A resident pointed out that during the renovation of the rank in Alexandra Street, many informal traders moved their business to the sidewalks and also then discarded the waste products there.

In January a report of discarded meat being illegally dumped in Alexandra Street was highlighted in the Estcourt News. Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality was called on to explain the by-laws governing this practice as well as substantiate about interim steps they would take.

Unfortunately there has been no response since then from the municipality. The municipality was again called on to investigate the meat discarded in Phillip Street.
