Devotees carry the kavady for Lord Muruga

Due to the victory, Lord Muruga is seen as the embodiment of Shiva’s light and wisdom, and devotees pray to him to overcome obstacles they might face as he is the vanquisher of evil.

Newcastle Siva Subramanian Temple hosted its annual Thaipoosam Kavady prayers from February 2 to February 11.

The Thaipoosam Kavady culminated in the main event on Sunday, where members of the Hindu community picked up their kavadies for Lord Muruga.

Allegedly, Thaipoosam orignated during one of the battles between the Asuras, or to be more specific, the demon Soorapadman and the Devas.

The Devas were unable to resist the vicious onslaught by the Asuras and approached Shiva to give them a worthy leader to help them conquer the demonic force. By surrendering completely to Lord Shiva and praying, their wish was granted as Lord Shiva created Skanda to lead the celestial forces to victory.

Due to the victory, Lord Muruga is seen as the embodiment of Shiva’s light and wisdom, and devotees pray to him to overcome obstacles they might face as he is the vanquisher of evil.

During Thaipoosam Kavady, devotees pray to Lord Muruga to receive his grace, so bad traits can be destroyed to lead them to purer lives.

Members of the Hindu community met at the park in St Thomas Street, Suryaville, with their kavadies and walked in the blistering heat to show their devotion.

Chairperson of Newcastle Siva Subramanian Temple, Bala Govender, said the festival was also an important cultural event. “It is when we look for growth, education and look at the way we eat and live.”
