Man stabbed repeatedly for cellphone in Newcastle CBD

A nearby security guard witnessed the attack and summoned the police and an ambulance.

Newcastle – A man was stabbed several times in his back, legs and chest, and robbed of his cellphone and other possessions in Murchison Street in the CBD on Saturday, February 4.

Allegedly, the victim was walking home, when he was accosted by an unknown number of men, who robbed him at knifepoint, before fleeing the scene, leaving the victim for dead on the side of the road.

A nearby security guard witnessed the attack and summoned the police and an ambulance. Paramedics stabilised the man on the scene, before transporting him to Madadeni Provincial Hospital for further medical treatment.

Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications and Liaison Officer, Lizzy Arumugam said she was unaware of the stabbing, but offered advice to follow at night:

– Walk at a steady pace facing the traffic to keep yourself visible. If you get lost, don’t wander aimlessly. Keep your pace steady and head for the nearest store or restaurant to ask for directions

– When out alone at night, your instincts are your best friend. If you are worried someone is following you, turn around. Let the person know you’re aware of their presence. Don’t head straight for your car or home, but go to a nearby store or restaurant, somewhere public and safe.

– A personal alarm or whistle can be used to let those around you know when something is wrong.

– A woman’s best defence against an attack is awareness and action. If you are faced with an uncomfortable or dangerous situation and you can escape, do so immediately. Only you can determine what you can or will do when faced with an attacker.
