Supposed robbery victims in hot water over lie

The tale did not ring true and police investigations revealed that the two had pocketed the money, after which they concocted the lie about the robbery

Two men, who claimed to be victims of a robbery, are in hot water after it was discovered that the incident was a prefabricated lie to cover up their own misdeeds.

On Wednesday, February 8, two men aged 23 and 26 reported to Elandslaagte police that they had been travelling in their delivery truck along the R602 when they were stopped by two people armed with firearms.

They claimed that they were ordered out of the vehicle and ran to the police station for help. The suspects then allegedly stole their cell-phones and cash belonging to the company they work for.

Their tale did not ring true and further investigation by police revealed that the two had pocketed the money, after which they concocted the lie about the robbery. The two face charges of theft and defeating the course of justice.

They appeared briefly in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday (February 13), where the matter was remanded to Monday, February 20.
