Rotarians pave way to school

Executive Secretary of Majuba Rotary, Christo Brockmann, said he and fellow Rotarian, Jayshree Maharaj, came up with the idea to give Grade Rs of 2016 a memorable Grade 1.

UTRECHT – Majuba Rotary D9370 recently donated 544 stationery packs to disadvantaged Grade 1 learners of 14 schools in and around Newcastle.

Executive Secretary of Majuba Rotary, Christo Brockmann, said he and fellow Rotarian, Jayshree Maharaj, came up with the idea to give Grade Rs of 2016 a memorable Grade 1.

“We initially started off with 400 packs, but ended with 544 packs, targeting non-governmental funded schools and children from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

The packs also contained basic toiletries, a colouring-in book and a board game.

Money for this project came from Rotary fund-raising and sponsorships.

“Certain wholesalers also met us halfway and gave us discounted prices to ensure we could make the project possible.”

In order to help as many Grade 1 learners as possible, Rotary asked the Department of Education and Department of Social Development to identify schools to benefit.

Motivated by the success of the campaign, Rotary would consider to launch a similar project next year, said Mr Brockmann.

“We are hoping to get the necessary stationery lists from schools and seeing which Grade 1s we can help.”
