The swift response of the community and Vryheid Neighbourhood Watch that fateful Monday morning, prevented the spread of the fire, which could have had catastrophic consequences for the entire block had it not been contained.

Owner of the property, Idris Meer, was overseas at the time of the incident. However, his heartfelt gratitude for the efforts of the community moved him to the extent that he approached the Vryheid Herald to assist him in delivering a message to everyone who contributed to the battle against the blaze that damaged both Spar and ACE Mica’s warehouse.

While it is believed that the fire broke out due to a short caused by rats chewing the cables, investigations are ongoing and both shops are currently back in business again.

“Thank God that the guys with the bakkie sakkies were there…” stated Mr Meer.
