Over 30 people were arrested on Friday evening during a crime prevention operation involving personnel from the Uthukela Cluster office and Ladysmith SAPS.

The operation was concentrated in the Ladysmith area, where a large contingent of police officers took to the streets and targeted specific crime “hot spot” areas.

31 arrests were made for crimes such as possession of dagga, possession of stolen property, driving under the influence of liquor, possession of a dangerous weapon, selling liquor without a licence, and assault with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

Altogether, 63 litres of alcohol, a small quantity of dagga, two dangerous weapons, as well as rock cocaine was recovered during the operation.

The aim was to combat drug and liquor crimes, which are often contributors to more serious offences.

All the arrested suspects appeared  in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court on Monday (January 23).
