Rotary Peace Walk commemorates historic battle

Walking for peace, one and all united together Rorke's Drift 2017

Rotary’s first ever Peace Walk on Sunday commemorated the 1879 battle of Rorke’s Drift with about 50 walkers walking around Shiyane hill, overlooking the historic battle site.
Rotarians monitored the route with Rotarian, Charles Aitkenhead (who spearheaded the event) of Rorke’s Drift Hotel, making sure everyone knew where to go.
The route covered about 7.5km around the hill, which gave participants a chance to look at the ancient San paintings on the hill overlooking the Buffalo River valley.
“A great way to remember a historical day with a peaceful walk,” said Rotarian Ken Vorster, who took the photographs for the Courier. “Thanks to all participants and the Rotarians who made sure everyone was kept refreshed and generally assisted on the day.”
