Driving lessons to be implemented in schools

Transport Department looking at new ways to promote road safety

Driving lessons will soon be included in the South African school curriculum.

Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said that road safety education needed to start at an early age.

“I have no doubt that road safety education that starts at an early age should be one of the core focus areas in assisting us to turn the tide as far as road deaths are concerned. Formal education and training will remain important, but we must also broaden our minds and find ways to include road safety messages into the wider curriculum, into mathematics and science, geography and civic education,” Peters said.

The minister added that the country’s roads would be safer if pupils were allowed to take their learner driver’s license test as part of the Grade 12 national certificate.
