Dismay as water supply is interrupted

Public turned away at the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) office because water supply was interrupted. Read more

NEWCASTLE – The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) office closed shop early on Monday, January 16, because water supply was interrupted.

“The public, driving school applicants, people wishing to renew licences or collect licence cards and so forth, drove all the way or used public transport, just to see the RTI was closed with no prior knowledge,” complained Rafik Lattif of the Amajuba Driving School committee.

Mr Lattif said the only notice about the closure was on the front door at the premises.

“The station put a notice on the door, stating it was closed because there was no water. This is not the first incident, as in 2016 the same thing occurred on several occasions.”

While understanding the role water played in hygiene, Mr Lattif pointed out that banks did not offer the public use of their ablution facilities and yet never turned people away.

“The Amajuba Driving School committee suggested the station make use of water tanks to avoid similar problems in the future through meetings and a memorandum. Yet, nothing has happened,” Mr Latiff said.

Upset that a lack of water brought business proceedings to a grinding halt, he believed something needed to be done as soon as possible to prevent this from happening again.

Station commander, King Gama, claimed he was not allowed to comment on the matter.

RTI’s communication department was contacted on several occasions, but to no avail.

However, a source claimed the lack of water on January 16 was a once-off situation.

“If there is a burst water pipe in Ncandu Park, and repair work needs to be done, we are affected. But, it was just once and there were no other incidents such as this in 2016,” the source claimed.
