Child Welfare tackles child abuse and domestic violence

Substance abuse is an issue which can be linked to the abuse, as it leaves a person impaired and causes poor decision making skills.

PATTERSON STREET – It would seem the recent holidays were far from festive for some. Newcastle Child Welfare reported 15 cases of abuse during December.

Social worker, Nobuntu Gamede, said the cases ranged from domestic violence, child neglect and child abuse.

“Substance abuse is an issue which can be linked to the abuse, as it leaves a person impaired and causes poor decision making skills.”

While the cases are being investigated, victims often don’t report abuse because they are intimidated and fear stigmatisation.

“If you remain quiet, no one can help you. One of the best things an abuse victim can do, is to come forward,” Ms Gumede emphasised.

Leaving the toxic environment of an abusive partner can be a huge relief. “Leaving an abusive life is good for your sanity, health and future.”

Child Welfare also offers counselling to families and abuse victims.
