Tips for not breaking the bank this holiday

Don't start the New Year by dipping into credit, cater for it now in this month and give yourself the gift of peace of mind

2016 had its fair share of challenges but we need to learn and grow from these difficulties and not let them define us. We need to adapt to changes and rely on our intelligence and resilience to overcome.

What we shouldn’t do is over indulge as a mechanism to temporarily self soothe in an unhealthy manner. Do not over indulge by over spending, in alcohol consumption or any other so-called ‘quick fixes’ with potential long-term adverse consequences.
Control the mind to focus on healthy choices.  Just because something is on sale, it doesn’t mean you need it. Step back and ask yourself if you want or need it. On the same token, take advantage of sales for things you do need and use often. It may not be as exciting as luxury goods are but it’s the sensible thing to do.

The holidays are a joyous time for giving but remember a gift of genuine affection comes from the heart; not the wallet.  Adopt a pet in need of a loving home from the animal shelter for a special gift to the children, donate to a charity in the name of a loved one, have a family day out by feeding the needy, hand make a special gift made with love that’s personalised.

Think out of the box and avoid being superficial. Don’t forget to give yourself a gift and this doesn’t have to be material.  Self-love equals peace of mind. Set boundaries when the family spends or communicates their wants.

As a family get together and jointly discuss the budget and stick to it. In the budget include major expenses that you need for the new year eg educational fees.

The family is less likely to put pressure on you when they understand the dynamics of your income and expenses. Also this exercise helps teach them responsible habits.

Don’t start the New Year by dipping into credit, cater for it now in this month and give yourself the gift of peace of mind.  Imagine how wonderful it would be if you came home with a 13th cheque this holiday!

Starting January, set aside funds every month so that next December you have that extra cash without interfering with your monthly budget or incurring unnecessary debt.  Wishing our community a safe and happy holiday and a rewarding New Year!
