Two men accused of house robbery and murder in Ladysmith were recently sentenced to lengthy terms of imprisonment by the High Courts of Pietermaritzburg and Madadeni respectively.
On February 16 last year, neighbours heard screams coming from the home of an elderly couple in Kandahar Avenue.
The neighbours alerted police and on arrival, officers found that the homeowners had been robbed and tied up.
One of the homeowners, 64-year-old Satyaprakash Mangru, died of asphyxiation in the incident.
Police went hunting for the robbers and on March 3 last year, the suspects were arrested in the Umbulwane area.
Both accused were denied bail and remained in custody until they were sentenced recently.
On November 18, 21-year-old Bongumusa Magasela pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment for robbery and 22 years for murder.
His brother, 22-year-old Mxolisi Magasela, was found guilty and sentenced on December 9 to 15 years’ behind bars for robbery, five years in prison for assault and life imprisonment for murder.
The investigating officer, Captain Mazwi Shabalala, expressed his appreciation to Ladysmith Station Commander Brigadier Kunene, other members of Ladysmith SAPS and the forensic investigators from Ladysmith Criminal Record & Crime Scene Management (CRCSM), whose assistance and commitment helped him investigate and put together the case.
