UPDATE – Family members of abandoned toddler are traced

The little girl's mother has been charged and appeared in court

Following last week’s front page story about the little girl who was abandoned in a store, family members have come forward.

The Social Development Department‘s Social Worker Gugulethu Zikalala reported on Monday that family members of the child’s mother and father responded after the article in the newspaper.

The little girl’s mother has been charged and appeared in court and Ms Zikalala said that the details cannot be revealed.

While the child remains in a place of safety, she is receiving counselling. Social workers will now begin the process of reunification, where assessments of the families will be done to ascertain if the family is suitable to raise the child.

Thereafter further support will be offered by a Social Worker who will monitor the child’s living conditions to ensure that her well-being is a priority.

“We would like to thank the Estcourt News and the people who responded to the article,” said Ms Zikalala.
