Arcelor Mittal’s Transformation Manager, Joe Nowbath said there is a need in industry for skilled tradesmen, so they took it upon themselves to create an organisation which does not only benefit the company, but also schools in the community.

Madadeni Science Centre Manager, Tebogo Habedi said every three years, six focus schools are chosen to mould pupils into science enthusiasts at a young age.

“This project was formed in collaboration with the Department of Education and Arcelor Mittal as Mittal needs engineers and feels liable to provide an institution where learners can gain access to good facilities without the burden of financial implications. Arcelor Mittal even provides transport for schools to reach the Science Centre,” she explained.

The annual Outstanding Achievers Awards for 2016 was held at the Centre on December 8 to celebrate excellence and motivate learners to excel at a secondary level in order to produce good results in the tertiary phase of their education.

The six focus schools which were present, currently in their second year of the programme were Ikhwezi High School, Hlalanathi High School, Bethamoya High School, Thubelihle High School, Indonsa High School and Xolani High School.

The top five students from grade 10 and 11 of each school were awarded for good performance throughout the year.

Mr Nowbath thanked the Science Centre manager and her team for their brilliant efforts. He motivated learners to work hard in school, as this was the foundation of their future.
