Spinning spectacular leaves crowd reeling

THE smell of burning rubber filled the air last Saturday as spinning enthusiasts flocked to a fundraising event in aid of 15-year-old Junaid Opperman.

The exhilarated crowd was entertained by fearless fanatics of this particular brand of motorsport who pushed their vehicles to the absolute limit to keep their audience enthralled.

The sound of screeching tyres, accompanied by billowing clouds of smoke and burning rubber in the air kept the spectators cheering as one by one the participants put their cars and their bodies through the paces to come out on top for Junaid’s cause on two wheels as well as four.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, spinning is a form of motorsport, which is believed to have originated in the townships but has since taken the country by storm.

Last December, a similar fundraising event was held to raise funds for Junaid’s very own set of wheels in the form of a motorised wheelchair and was well-supported by the public, subsequently enabling Junaid to enjoy more freedom of movement.

Enthusiastic cheers rang out from the crowd who marveled at the drivers’ and passengers’ antics from behind fences and protective tyre walls shielding spectators from the reeling and spinning vehicles, seemingly out of control, but perfectly manoeuvred by bold and intrepid drivers of all ages and experience levels, proving their worth as they tore up the tar for charity.
