‘Nothing standard’ about Kevin Perkins

VRYHEID Ski Boat Club played host to one of South Africa’s top-selling stand-up comedians last Wednesday evening and the response from the locals was outstanding.

Michael Naicker, the alter-ego of Durbanite, Kevin Perkins, who currently resides in the UK, paid a visit to South African shores recently for his ‘Mind the Gap’ underground tour. “Homesick and lus for a good jol with his SA fans,” it says in the event description on the Rainbow Nation Events Facebook page, which is certainly worth reading (in Michael Naicker’s definitive Durban Indian accent, of course), “Iron Mike returns for a brief tour to catch up with his cuzzies and visit his family…”

Kevin Perkins, the ‘wit-ou’ side of “SA’s favourite charou, fresh off the boat…” is more than just a funny guy. He studied Mechanical Engineering at Technikon Natal and describes himself as a “Comedian, speaker and motivational humourist. Cancer survivor and positive thinker” on his Facebook profile.

The Michael Naicker persona he has become so well-known for over the years came into being around 2001 and was largely influenced by growing up in Durban, which has the most substantial Indian population in sub-Saharan Africa and is ‘the largest ‘Indian’ city outside India,’ according to Wikipedia.

“Really enjoying the SA shows,” he stated on social media, during his visit to South Africa. “There’s definitely something special about performing back in SA…”
