DRAMA is said to have ensued at the ward committee election that was held in ward 11 last week with bickering and pepper spray being the highlights of the day.

On a video that was taken by a community member who wished to remain anonymous, members of the public are seen coughing and sneezing as they try to make their way in and out of Bhekuzulu Hall to cast their votes.

It is alleged that someone set off the pepper spray after an argument broke out between IFP and ANC members with regards to the elections.

Members of the ANC are said to have been unhappy as a similar election had been held before in this ward and the party had won. Members are said to have complained that what was being done was unfair and was a ploy to get the IFP to win the ward committee elections.

It is unclear who exactly set off with the pepper spray but things turned bad really quickly thereafter as an elderly woman is said to have fallen unconscious after wheezing and coughing and struggling to breathe.

“Members of the public were forced to vote even under these circumstances,” said the community member who took the video.

The Vryheid Herald’s attempts to get hold of both the AbaQulusi Speaker Michael Khumalo, and ward councilor, Lethu Mhlongo, were to no avail.
