Amajuba Disaster Risk Management Workshop

Referring to the current water and drought crisis in the Amajuba District, he emphasised the positive effects of previous workshops.

Provincial Disaster Management Centre (PDMC) together with the District and three local municipalities, presented a Amajuba Disaster Risk Management Workshop, at the Monte Vista Sports Complex on Tuesday, November 29.

Event organiser and disaster management manager, Mzandile Xaba said the purpose of the workshop was to educate councillors, political leaders and traditional leaders on disaster management, and the impact it has on a community.

“We saw new councillors come into the municipality in August; therefore we felt they needed to be aware of how disaster management operated, and how to report to the department.”

Programme director, Mzuwandile Xaba opened with prayer, before District Mayor, Doctor Musa Ngubane welcomed guests and discussed the purpose and context of the workshop.

Referring to the current water and drought crisis in the Amajuba District, he emphasised the positive effects of previous workshops.

After a brief tea break, members of PDMC discussed topics such as the legislative framework for disaster management, guidlines for disaster risk reduction planning, and integrated framework capacity for disaster management.

Incident management, protocol and disaster declaration, as well as guidelines for disaster recovery grant funding, were also put in the spotlight.

Mr Xaba said the new Disaster Management Centre in Madadeni Section 2, should be complete by early next year, currently under construction, should simplify procedures.

He said more water and drought awareness programmes would be conducted to educate people on the current drought crisis.
