Newcastle Creative Network inspired people of all ages to embrace their culture at their fifth annual Newcastle Township Arts Festival, which was held from November 25 to 27.

The festival in Section 4 of Madadeni Township has become a much anticipated highlight. As the network has experienced steady growth, so has the festival.

Organiser of the event, Theodor Duma explained the exhibition showcased artworks of fashion designers, craftsmen, artists, and new innovative ideas from talented residents.

The variety of free interactive activities and performances was designed to help youth find pride in things that make them unique, and to develop a deeper knowledge in their culture.

“Many people don’t notice art in the community and we hoped to establish a market for these artworks. We focused on developing markets and taking care of the artists by providing them with proper exposure,” said Mr Duma.

One of the artists, Bonginkosi Mhlanga said this was a great initiative to become noticed. He explained art was a brilliant way to express one’s innermost feelings. He is a successful acrylic portrait painter making a living as a professional artist.

The fascinating activities continued throughout the three-day event and a wide variety of food and refreshments reflecting and celebrating ethnic diversity was served.

Mr Duma said the event didn’t quite receive the response they hoped for. However, this was a great start as the community had a chance to focus on the talent that surrounded them.

The exhibition was a vibrant affair featuring singing, modelling shows, sketches and many more exciting performances.
