Burglars arrested, stolen property recovered

Upon searching the vehicle, the officers found a flat-screen TV, a DVD player and appliances

Ladysmith Visible Policing officers, together with the K9 Unit, arrested four suspects on Monday (November 28) for possession of suspected stolen property, housebreaking, and possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

This after the officers stopped a suspicious-looking vehicle in the Observation Hill area. Upon searching the vehicle, they found a flat-screen TV, a DVD player, appliances and clothing. The four occupants were promptly arrested.

The officers were convinced that they were responsible for other incidents of housebreaking that had recently occurred in the area, one of which resulted in a police official’s service pistol being stolen from her premises.

The suspects were interviewed individually and it became clear that they were indeed responsible for other housebreakings in the area. Late that afternoon, police recovered the stolen pistol as well as the ammunition that was taken with it.

A VCR player, a flat-screen television and clothing were among other items recovered in different areas in Ladysmith.

The four suspects, aged between 30 and 39, will appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court later this week.

KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bheki Langa commended the officers for working tirelessly in apprehending the suspects and recovering the stolen goods, including an illegal firearm with live ammunition.

“I urge the community to refrain from buying stolen goods because that is also considered a criminal activity. When intending to buy something from any individual, if not a shop, please ask for the documents pertaining to that item. If there is no proof that the seller bought it legally, it will be regarded as stolen,” he said.
