Update: Elderly woman’s attackers from squatter camp?

The two attackers fled the scene, running into open veld where the squatter camp is situated

During the massive manhunt for two men who brutally attacked an 80-year-old woman in Van Riebeeck Park today, police targeted a squatter camp in open veld behind the Indoor Sports Complex.

According to the SAPS, this is not the first time these shacks have sprung up there; shacks were removed at the beginning of this year after being reported to Public Safety.

“This is a squatter camp for criminals. That is why we went there today,” said a police official.

The SAPS official elaborated that people who isolate themselves by living in conditions like this are more than likely criminals who want to keep under the radar.

The attack in Van Riebeeck Park earlier today saw an 80-year-old sickly woman being savagely assaulted by two men in her home. Cash and cell-phones were stolen.

The men, who punched and kicked the old woman in the face, are believed to live in this squatter camp.

The 80-year-old’s domestic worker happened to arrive while the attack was taking place and the two men fled the scene, running into open veld where the squatter camp is situated.

Police urge people to avoid parking near the Indoor Sports Complex day and night, as they may fall victim to crime.
