Why monitor meters when there is no water?

Moses Mthethwa explains why he must check water meters even though there is no water supply to the town.

The Vryheid Herald received a call from a bemused resident who found it peculiar that a municipal meter reader was still going around every month checking water meters.

“Why is he checking water meters when the municipality hasn’t supplied water to residences for months?” he asked.

We managed to track down the meter reader, Moses Mthethwa, and questioned him about what he was doing.

This is what he had to say:

Before the water supply to the town can be turned on again, all of the stolen water meters will have to be replaced.

Moses goes around town, not to take water meter readings, but to keep a record of which water meters have been stolen.

He says that quite a lot of meters have been stolen, in some cases all the meters in an entire street, and more are being stolen every day.
