Newcastle Mall investigates car theft

The vehicle was shown on CCTV camera, leaving the mall shortly after the owner reported the theft to mall management.

Since the introduction of additional security measures and the employment of car guards, vehicle theft at Newcastle Mall has dwindled.

It thus came as a nasty shock when a motor vehicle was stolen at the mall parking lot last Thursday.

Newcastle Mall Marketing Manager, Beulah Rajkumar, said the vehicle was shown on CCTV camera leaving the mall premises at 10.45am, shortly after the owner reported the theft to mall management.

“We have, unfortunately, had vehicles stolen from the mall before. This incident will be thoroughly investigated and this too will bring on enhancements,” she said.

Mrs Rajkumar explained all parking attendants were screened after the theft to ensure they were doing their jobs and were not intimidated or acted as accomplices.

“We are confident that, had they seen something, it would have been reported promptly.”

Patrons should double-check their vehicles were properly locked, and refrain from leaving valuables in their cars, she warned.
