Police officer killed as syndicate robs 5 Boxer stores in 6 hours

The robberies took place in Bergville, Ixopo, Jolivet, Hammarsdale and Hlabisa

One police officer has lost his life after a wave of Boxer Supermarket robberies by a highly-organised gang on Tuesday.

The robbers struck five different Boxer outlets across the breadth of KZN in no less than six hours.

The five stores robbed were in Bergville, Ixopo, Jolivet, Hammarsdale and Hlabisa.

It is believed that the heavily-armed gang, brandishing automatic assault rifles loaded with armour-piercing rounds, struck the outlets by road: in Bergville at 2am, Hlabisa at 6am and both Jolivet and Hammarsdale at 7am.

According to The Witness, the Institute for Security Studies’ (ISS) Johan Burger stated that the capabilities of organised criminal syndicates in South Africa are extensive, with well-planned schemes to outmanoeuvre the police and get away with their bounty at all costs.

During the robbery in Ixopo, the attackers opened fire on private security guards and a police patrol van that responded to an alarm at the supermarket, which resulted in an Ixopo police officer being shot and killed during the shoot-out.
