15 arrested and over 500kg of dagga seized

Two separate drug busts net dagga with a street value of close to R1 million

Over the weekend, police in the Uthukela Cluster seized a whopping 524kg of dagga and arrested 15 people in two operations held in Amangwe and Ntabamhlophe.

On Saturday, Ntabamhlophe SAPS acted on intelligence-driven information regarding people who were alleged to be smuggling drugs. Officers swooped on a house in Shayamoya Location, where they found five women and three men from Lesotho busy wrapping the dagga into 24 parcels.

The eight suspects, aged between 28 and 57 years old, were arrested and 264kg of dagga was seized. The dagga has a street value of around R450,000.

Amangwe SAPS were conducting a crime prevention operation on Sunday afternoon when they came across a suspicious-looking Quantum minibus driving towards Injesuthi Road.

The driver of the vehicle was stopped and the vehicle searched. The alertness of the police paid off when 39 bags of dagga were found inside.

Seven suspects, aged between 21 and 54 years old, were arrested. The dagga, which weighs around 260kg, has a street value of around R400,000.

All 15 suspects are due to appear in the Estcourt Magistrate’s Court, where they face charges of possession of dagga.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa, praised the police for recovering the drugs. “This is an indication that police are everywhere to make sure they apprehend all those who are breaking the law,” he said.
