Help police fight livestock theft in KZN

During previous operations conducted by various Stock Theft Units in the province, a number of stolen livestock were recovered and arrests made

There has been an increase in stock theft cases in the KwaZulu-Natal  province, especially around Ladysmith, Ezakheni, Elandslaagte and Harry Gwala Cluster areas.

This has become a major concern  to police, and the SAPS say they will intensify operations in curbing these crimes by carrying out more patrols and ‘stop and search’ duties.

During previous  operations conducted by various Stock Theft Units in the province, a number of stolen livestock were recovered and arrests made.

“Since we are approaching the festive season, there is usually an increase in stock theft cases reported to police. We are therefore making an appeal to members of the community to get involved in preventing such cases by looking after their livestock,” say police.

Police urge the community to co-operate with them by making sure their livestock are brand-marked. In terms of the Animal Identification Act 6 of 2002, it is the duty of livestock owners to brand their animals. Police will act on those who fail to comply with this Act. Stock Theft Units are willing to assist livestock owners with regards to permits / certificates and equipment to brand their livestock with.

Crime awareness campaigns are also conducted by officers for various communities, including Izinduna and other crime-fighting organisations, teaching them the importance of branding their animals.
