EXCLUSIVE: Former Mayor denies arrest rumours

Rumours of Councillor Rehman's arrest are greatly exaggerated, the former Mayor has stated.

Former Mayor, Afzul Rehman has not been arrested by special investigation unit, the Hawks.

Cllr Rehman said although he made a point of not commenting on rumours, he felt compelled to defend his reputation against recent, troubling allegations that he was behind bars.

He stated on record he was not under investigation by the Hawks.

Cllr Rehman, who was on holiday in the United Kingdom until recently, said the first he heard of such rumours was from wellwishers when he returned on Friday.

“I can confirm categorically, to the best of my knowledge, I am not under investigation by any institution, Hawks or otherwise. I have never been interviewed, or asked to answer to any claims.”

Mayor, Makhosini Nkosi added if the rumours were true, he would have heard about it.

While he believed the reports of an investigation into the municipality by the Hawks to be true, Cllr Nkosi said he had no personal knowledge of the matter.

He promised continued transparency from the municipality in this regard.

Likewise, Cllr Rehman said all decisions he took as Mayor were done with the collective knowledge of the Executive Committee, and believed the rumours of his arrest were intended to discredit him.

“There are very few decisions taken that I do not stand by or regret.”
