46 arrests for copper cable theft

Children are being electrocuted by live wires that are left hanging after suspects have stolen pieces of cable

KwaZulu-Natal police, in conjunction with other law enforcement agencies, embarked on a number of operations last month in an attempt to clamp down on copper cable theft in the province.

The theft of copper cables and other Eskom property, as well as the illegal connection of electricity in various areas, is of major concern to police and other stakeholders.

Children are being electrocuted by live wires that are left hanging after suspects have stolen pieces of cable.

During the operations, officers arrested a total of 46 suspects for possession of suspected stolen copper cables, theft of cables and other related cases. These suspects appeared in various courts in the province.

“Our message is clear: ‘We will not tolerate criminals who make life difficult for law-abiding citizens in our province. We warn those criminals who are practicing such acts to stop, failing which they will face the long arm of the law.

“We will also act against those who are buying, receiving and transporting stolen copper cables.

Police will continue with these operations in the province in an attempt to curb the theft of copper cables. They also appeal to the community to report any criminals who are stealing or selling copper cables in their areas to the police or any other law enforcement agencies for further investigation, says Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Bhekinkosi Langa.
