Historic events of last century were remembered by an enthusiastic group of walkers who took on the strange October weather on Saturday afternoon to complete an 8km walk in memory of the miner’s walk of 1899.
With the promise of war between Britain and the Transvaal, in October 1899, 7 000 Zulu mine workers walked away from the conflict. They trekked from Johannesburg to Hattingspruit in just ten days! Led by a son of the king, iNkosi Pheka kaDinizulu and a young Natal official, John Marwick, they frustrated the Boer advance on Natal by walking right through their lines and on to freedom! The “March” is commemorated at the University of the Witwatersrand (where it started) and in Volksrust (the half-way place) with a plaque and in Dundee by the memorial walk! The 8km walk started at Pensymons Street and ended at Talana Museum.
