Sports grounds are anything but a paradise

A noticeable decline in the condition of the grounds, and in the behaviour of residents who frequented the area, has been observed by the Neighbourhood Watch officials.

PARADISE Sports Grounds is a popular venue for sporting enthusiasts, as it caters for both cricket and soccer.

However, it would seem the grounds are being abused and vandalized.

Portions of the perimeter walls are broken and empty bottles are scattered everywhere.

“I have even seen people smoke dagga on the grounds,” claimed a source.

Mark Jacobs, who runs a neighbourhood watch in the area, said he had noticed a general decline in the condition of the grounds, and in the behaviour of residents who frequented the area.

“It is prolific for drugs, with people going there for the sole purpose of vandalism and taking drugs.”

Allegedly cough syrup was the most popular substance abused by those frequenting the grounds.

Mr Jacobs believes the municipality needs to take stringent steps to prevent the grounds from falling into total disrepair.

“The grounds are meant for the community, but I have even seen youngsters fornicating there,” he said in disgust.

Despite the presence of security guards, people were not deterred from abusing the grounds, he claimed.

“There is no control.”

No statement was forthcoming from the municipality at the time of going to print.
