Update: Police officer arrested for killing pedestrian

The constable was traced and arrested the same day, and should be appearing in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court this week

Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a Tactical Response Team (TRT) vehicle hit a pedestrian on Sunday.

Just before 5.30pm on Sunday, Ezakheni police were alerted to the fact that a police vehicle had struck a pedestrian along the Helpmekaar Road in the St Chad’s area.

On arrival, they discovered the body of a deceased man, as well as a TRT vehicle with no occupants inside. The vehicle had been stoned and set alight by members of the public.

It is alleged that the suspect left the scene shortly after the collision, leaving behind the vehicle. The 31-year-old constable was traced and arrested the same day, and should be appearing in the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court this week.

The deceased is 28 years old and has not yet been officially identified.

Police are investigating the incident internally as well as criminally.
