Champ of champs decided in the rain

Our Midlands players put up a good fight, especially Khanyisile, a 13-year-old African boy from Estcourt, who astounded everybody by getting to the semi-finals

Wow, what a change in the weather! Although the rain was so welcome, the bowlers who were playing in last weekend’s ‘Champ of Champs’ tournament had a hard time, having to come off the greens while the lightning was around. Then it was back on the greens to complete their games.

The conditions were extremely difficult, but still some excellent bowls was played, with some games going down to the wire.

The club had a lovely big fire, so when the bowlers came off the greens, there was somewhere for them to try and dry off and warm up.

Our Midlands players put up a good fight, especially Khanyisile, a 13-year-old African boy from Estcourt, who astounded everybody by getting to the semi-finals. He out-bowled all his section, consisting of many senior men who have bowled longer than this child has been alive.

In heavy rain, Khanyisile played very well, but unfortunately his opponent beat him 21-13.

Our Midlands lady, Annelie from Harrismith, made it to the finals, but alas lost to Alice from Newcastle. So the ‘Champ of Champs’ for 2016 are: ladies – Alice Howells from Newcastle; men – Barry Matlow from Richards Bay.

Please once again have Eric Robinson in your thoughts and prayers, as he begins his treatment at Hilton Hospital. Hurry and get well, Eric. You are missed very much.
