Jock from the bushveld goes “home”

When people tried to take him home, they would only have him for a while before he would jump the fence and go to the place he saw as home, namely the garages in Phillip Frame Road

The dog that became known as “the guardian of Phillip Frame Road” was sadly put to sleep on Monday.

Called “Jock” by local residents, this dog was not owned by anyone, but rather belonged to the streets. When people tried to take him home, they would only have him for a while before he would jump the fence and go to the place he saw as home, namely the garages in Phillip Frame Road. The name “Jock” suited him, as Phillip Frame Road is flanked by veld all up the hillside, reminding one of the well-known story and movie ‘Jock of the Bushveld’.

Jock stayed in Phillip Frame Road for 12 years.

He was well looked after by the community and was given a bed with blankets and pillows, receiving meals every day from various families who would otherwise have made him their own pet.

According to residents, he was a friendly dog and shared his shelter and food with the dassies.

A while back, Jock was neutered and had the cancer removed in Bergville, but unfortunately it returned and Jock started suffering again. Sadly, due to the suffering, the time eventually came when it was the humane thing to do to put him down.

The “guardian” is no more, but his memory will live on and people are sure to imagine that they see him loping down the road towards the garages he was so fond of…

Rest in peace, Jock, old boy!
