Gold coins and firearms stolen in farm robbery

The robbers managed to gain entrance to the farm through an electric fence

Police have confirmed that a large amount of gold coins and firearms were stolen from a Winterton farm on Saturday morning.

Three heavily-armed robbers ‘hit’ the farm on Saturday.

The farmer, who is away on holiday overseas, was lucky not to be present. However, a security guard on the farm was tied up and assaulted. The robbers then managed to gain entrance to the farm through an electric fence.

They used an angle grinder to cut their way into a safe and removed a large number of firearms, cash and Kruger Rand coins. They then fled the scene in the farmer’s Audi Q7.

The security guard managed to free himself and notified police. The farmer was also notified and activated a tracking device on the vehicle.

A cat-and-mouse chase ensued between police and the robbers, who used back roads to avoid police in a mad dash towards Newcastle.

Later that evening, police recovered the Q7 in the Oziweni area in a supermarket parking lot. It had been abandoned by the robbers. All the booty and weapons from the robbery were missing and have so far not been recovered.
