Wishing to remain anonymous, a business owner claimed the leak had been ongoing for several days, despite being reported the municipality. He said the stench had become unbearable, and it was unfair to expose clients to the smell.

Upon investigation, the Newcasttle Advertiser noticed a large part of the veld was covered in sewage spillage.

Customer Relations Manager of Newcastle Municipality, Doctor Dumisani Thabethe said the problem had been attended to on the same day the report was received.

“The sewer spillage was reported to the municipality on Friday morning and municipal workers responded immediately. The cause of the spillage was due to a burst in the main sewage pump at the Ayliff Street pump station. We excavated and repaired the spillage, as well as the pump by late Friday night,” he explained.
