NEWCASTLE CENTRAL – Residents who collect post from the York Street boxes, should watch their step.

A complaint was given to the Newcastle Advertiser at the weekend, regarding ongoing prostitution near the Ayliff Street intersection, and what was left behind when morning dawned.

Upon investigation, it was found the prostitutes had reportedly laid out cardboard sheeting behind the York Street post boxes, as a makeshift bed for purposes of entertaining clients.

A used condom was within a few feet of the boxes.

The area is also rife with litter, although it is unclear if prostitutes or uncouth residents are to blame for this.

Residents’ concerns were addressed via email to the South African Post Office (SAPO).

Brian Naidoo, from the Operations division of SAPO KwaZulu-Natal, said the area around the post boxes was cleaned daily, during the week, by local municipal employees, and also by Sorting Depot staff from SAPO.

“SAPO has requested the SAPS deal with illegal activities in the area. These activities take place after hours, and in an area over which SAPO does not have control. The post boxes themselves are in good condition, and most of them are rented.”
