Update: Desperate appeal for help fails to save Devika

Devika was well-known in the community for being a friendly person who was always willing to help others

Devika Govender passed away on August 9 after suffering for many years with renal failure.

This condition caused her to weaken and she could no longer work.

The Ladysmith Gazette and sister paper Times of Ladysmith published articles on her, asking the community to help her find a kidney. Unfortunately, a suitable blood type for Devika could not be found and her health further deteriorated.

She had dialysis four times a day and this went on for years.

Her mother and family would help look after her when she was really sick.

Renal failure (also known as kidney failure or renal insufficiency) is a medical condition in which the kidneys fail to adequately filter waste products from the blood. It is when your kidneys stop working well enough for you to live without dialysis or a kidney transplant. This can happen very suddenly (acute renal failure) or slowly over time.

Devika visited the hospital once a month for medical treatment.

Devika was well-known in the community for being a friendly person who was always willing to help others.

Just before her death, she was admitted to La Verna Hospital, where she passed away in the company of her mother.

Family and friends greatly supported the family during this difficult time.

Devika’s death on Woman’s Day was a true symbol of a strong woman who fought a good battle for many years and who loved her family with all her heart.

Devika sadly leaves behind her husband and three beautiful girls. She was a true role model and pillar of strength to them when she lived.

The Govender family extend their thanks to all who assisted in this trying time.
