Theft out of motor vehicles on the rise

Remote jamming is not a new trend; but a favoured one for criminals who hover in busy streets, blending in with the surroundings, lying in wait with a remote in their hand

Remote jamming is a technique used by thieves to gain access to your vehicle and either steal your belongings or in the worst case, steal your car too.

It is not a new trend; but a favoured one for criminals who hover in busy streets, blending in with the surroundings, lying in wait with a remote in their hand. This crime is also on the increase in Estcourt, especially in the central business district (CBD). Community Police Forum (CFP) Deputy Chairperson David Allen said theft from motor vehicles is on the rise in the CBD, as was discussed at a recent CPF meeting, the preferred method used by thieves is remote jamming.

Here is how it works:
You park your car in Harding Street, exit, close the door and activate your central locking system but the ‘remote jammer’ is standing a short distance from you, pressing on a remote control device.

“This interferes with the signal from the car remote and your vehicle does not lock. Once you leave, they have access to your vehicle,” explained Mr Allen.

“Always wait and listen for the beep or double-check to see if your car is locked,” he added.

Another trend of ‘smash-and-grabs’ have also been reported in the CBD. Be alert and be safe.
