So said Miss Newcastle, Courtney Smith herself, adding the response and support from the community had been fantastic thus far.

Her challenge, of course, is to cycle 106 kilometres in aid of charity.

Ms Smith forms part of a team of Newcastillians who will stare down the Amashova Durban Classic on October 16.

Pledges and donations received will benefit the many projects of the local Lions Club.

While Ms Smith was excited for company challenges to begin, the team received a welcome sponsorship of team shirts for race day.

“We are a big team, and the sponsorship will go a long way to getting our team kitted out and looking uniform for race day.”

Ms Smith explained the training got bigger and better as the weeks went by.

Many members attended spinning classes in the week, to counter the difficulty of organising training rides in the week.

“But that’s where our Sunday training sessions come in. Every Sunday, we meet at Melo’s pub and grill and set off on what we call ‘our big ride’.”

Ms Smith encouraged residents to join in on the training rides, and believed this great initiative could be taken to the next level.

She also expressed excitement about what the new week had to offer.

“I encourage all companies and residents to get involved, and help us help others.”
