Breaking News – Strike action breaks out at Inkosi Langalibalele Municipality

As part of the strike action, libraries and employees within the municipal building in Victoria Street have been requested by EPWP employees to leave the work place

Unconfirmed reports state that Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) employees together with related programme employees launched strike action a few hours ago, (Thursday, September 8).

It is believed that the workers want to be permanently employed. Their current employment contracts expire at the end of September. As part of the strike action, libraries and employees within the municipal building in Victoria Street have been requested by EPWP employees to leave the work place.

Police were seen at the municipal building including a number of employees from other sectors such as the Finance and Electrical departments lingered outside in the parking lot.

The Expanded Public Works Programme is one of the government’s various programmes aimed at reducing unemployment and bring income relief through temporary work.

A municipal employee who would like to remain anonymous said:

“Communication channels are very poor, by now we should have received a message to give us direction on a way forward.We don’t where we stand at the moment and whether or not we should go home and return for work tomorrow,” he said, with confusion.

Neighbouring business people said they could hear loud commotion and singing when the striking workers marched through Victoria Street.

“This is very unfair of these workers, everyone wants to be employed.“If their time has come to pass they should accept it and look for other work,” said an eyewitness.
