KZN police confiscate 119 illegal firearms

According to police reports, the weapons seized consisted of six rifles, five shotguns, six home-made guns and 102 pistols. A total of 1077 rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the raids.

NEWCASTLE – Police clusters around KwaZulu-Natal recently conducted several operations during which 119 illegal firearms and ammunition were confiscated.

According to police reports, the weapons seized consisted of six rifles, five shotguns, six home-made guns and 102 pistols. A total of 1077 rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the raids.

The firearms will be tested by ballistics experts to determine if they were used in the commission of any crime.

Police arrested 112 suspects for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

“We will make sure that we apprehend those in possession of illegal firearms. We are warning criminals who possess unlicensed firearms, that we will pounce on them at anytime, wherever they may be hiding. We are also requesting those who are still in possession of a firearm belonging to a deceased person, to apply for a firearm licence to avoid facing criminal charges,” he concluded.

The KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa commended the police officers for the recovery of such a large number of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
