Beware of criminals when hitchhiking

There are risks attached to hitchhiking, since you do not know anything about the person you are getting a lift from or giving a lift to

Some people hitchhiking along the road in the Uthukela Cluster area have recently reported cases of robbery.

A 37-year-old man alleges that he was robbed while hitchhiking along the N11 from Ladysmith to Wasbank on Saturday.

He says he was joined by another man who was also looking for transport and they got a lift in a creamy-white sedan.

While travelling along, the driver suddenly pulled off the road and drew a firearm.

The driver then robbed the hitchhiker of his personal items, which included a cell-phone and cash.

There are risks attached to hitchhiking, since you do not know anything about the person you are getting a lift from or giving a lift to.

In the interests of your safety, be alert and careful when hitchhiking, especially at night.

It is advisable to rather call on friends and family for a lift or make use of public transport if possible.
